Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

1. Fix Health Care: Despite Mr. Obama’s recent political work, the insurance companies have too big a role and there is virtually no control of costs. The delivery of health care is deeply flawed, and that has not changed.

2. Improve American Food: Let’s move to organic in a big way. Also, what happened to the notion of truth in labeling? If something is a GMO, consumers should know because it is labeled.

3. Increase Exports: Encourage the creation of clean manufacturing of goods that are internationally marketable to eliminate the American trade deficit.

4. Leave Iraq. The pretext for the invasion (WMD) was false. The UN did not support the invasion. Congress did not declare war. And we are losing. There is no reason to remain there.

5. Leave Afghanistan. We went there to fight Al Qaeda, the argument being that the Taliban allowed Al Qaeda to train there. Al Qaeda did not like getting shot at, so they apparently went elsewhere. Now we are fighting the Taliban, again in a kind of defensive, losing war. We could always drop a few bombs if Al Qaeda returns.

6. Pay Debts: Instead of merely talking about reducing the deficit, why not start paying back the debt of the United States? That’s what most families do when they are in over their heads. When was the last time you heard a family wage earner say, “Honey, we are spending too much. Let’s reduce the rate of debt accumulation so we might be financially healthy in the future.”

7. Revise Copyright Law: Reduce the length of copyrights so that Mickey Mouse can die the respectful death he is owed. The lengthening of copyrights was a case of the big interests, such as Walt Disney, prevailing against what is in the best interest of the little guy. Copyrights should never extend more than 50 years. Never.

8. Fix Immigration Policy: Go ahead and reform immigration laws, but do not provide a “pathway” to legal residence for illegal aliens. Those here not in conformity to citizenship, registration, on a current visa, or other lawful status need to be deported. If you want more Mexicans to be allowed to immigrate here, create a new quota for them and allow them to apply for entry… from Mexico.

9. Add One More Consideration to Any Future Government Bail Out: Is this the best way to stimulate growth and production of what is needed in the United States? I am thinking of the bailout of the banks that were “too big to fail”. Hogwash. There were plenty of capitalists waiting to fill the void created by any bank failure. And as we are seeing, restoring financial health to banks did not encourage investment in the productive capacity that will create jobs and future wealth. Also, didn’t GM prove that it deserved to liquidate and disappear after years of building bad cars, abusing their customers, and agreeing to labor contracts that would eventually make the cost of cars uncompetitive?

10. Reduce the Consumption of Fossil Fuel: Let’s again work on an international treaty, with no nation exempt, to reverse the current trend on greenhouse gas emissions. That is the first step to solving the problem of climate change. National, state, local and individual actions are doomed without an international framework. And forget about cap and trade. It will simply lower the use of fossil fuels rather slowly. That is not enough of a paradigm shift to do any damn good.
