Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

Theodore Roosevelt, The Strenuous Life

I live in rural western Washington state with my wife. We are far from the public road, have a spring fed creek and forest trails that connect to an adjacent public forest. There are chicken coops; bee hives scattered about; two 4-wheel drive trucks to ease driving in the snow; a modest and comfortable house; and the original building on the property, a cabin built in 1968. The cabin and the house each have wood stoves for toasty warmth.

Most of my youth was spent in  Rouses Point and Wantagh in New York; and in Pointe Claire and Baie d’Urfe, both suburbs of Montreal in Canada. Outdoor activities I enjoyed during the years in Rouses Point were downhill skiing, skating, boating, swimming, and snowmobiling. Bicycling was a way to get around, but remains one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately, I have not done enough of it lately.

I am a licensed engineer and attorney, and make a living as an engineer. My work as a lawyer is primarily volunteer, including family law and arbitration work.

The name of this site, lawyer musings.com, was my first idea for a name after, well, musing about the blog I wished to create. That my first idea for a domain name was available was a pleasant surprise. The other surprise is the number of hits Google yields on searches about lawyer’s musing; many of us like to do it apparently.

Everyone in this family blogs: my wife on honey bees at www.honeybeesuite.com , our daughter on food issues at www.aisleofconfusion.com and I.

I have posted three times in opposition to a comity rule for engineers that failed to pass a vote of the Board of Registered Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. My opposition is not based on nationality – I am a dual national, a native born American and a native born Canadian under the laws of each country.
